Finding a great orthopedic dog bed for your Shih Tzu is much easier these days.  The only question is what kind of orthopedic dog bed do you want?

Orthopedic dog beds have improved greatly over the last couple of years.  they used to be just a lumpy pillow, but now they are being made of high quality material that last for years.

Many Shih Tzu beds these days are being make of memory foam.  the same high quality foam that expensive human beds are made of.  Memory foam gets its name from the fact that it retains its shape for a long time.  It has almost a magical quality how its able to hug your body.

You want a good layer of cushion on the dog bed because heavier dogs can easily bottom out thin beds and then they are essentially sleeping on the ground.

Another option to look for in orthopedic dog beds is some type of supplemental heat.  Now many of the higher quality Shih Tzu dog beds come with built in heater elements, with the top of the line coming with programmable thermostats.

heat is great therapy for older Shih Tzu with joint problems or arthritis.  Many people think heated dog beds are only for cold winters, but heat can be a useful therapy for your Shih Tzu all year round.

When buying orthopedic dog beds make sure you get one with a fully removable cover and one that is stain resistant.  If you can't easily remove the cover and wash it in the washing machine the dog bed can start to smell and look really run down fast.

Another great option I recently saw was some manufacturers recently started putting in Cedar chips into the bottom of some dog beds for odor control.

Orthopedic dog beds comes in a variety of sizes, so make sure you buy one big enough for your dog to grow into it.  Orthopedic dog beds can be expensive compared to some regular dog beds, but because they are built with quality they last longer and provide greater comfort.
