Dealing With Shih Tzu Allergies

Shih Tzu allergies are not uncommon.  In fact it is estimated that almost 20% of Shih Tzu could have some form of allergy.  In this article we will briefly talk about the different kinds of allergies Shih Tzu get and some basic medical treatments.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is also called allergic skin disease in dogs.  This is where the immune system over reacts to things in the environment.  These could be things like pollen, dust, mold, etc.  These are commonly what humans call hay fever.

Normally signs in dogs include sneezing, nasal discharge, licking of the paws or armpits.  In fact some dogs lick themselves so much the saliva stains their coat brown in some light haired dogs.

Common treatment for this is to give allergy medication, antihistamine, or prednisone in more severe cases.  Benadryl is commonly given to dogs.

Food Allergies

Shih Tzu allergies also include allergies to food.  Some signs that your Shih Tzu may have food allergies is diarrhea, skin inflammation or scratching, or vomiting.  Many people don't realize your dog should have a food allergy but never see them vomit or have diarrhea.

Food allergies to be caused by things like wheat, or some type of meat.  Food allergies are very hard to diagnosis an require a food trial, where your Shih Tzu is feed a novel meat and carbohydrate, like venison and rice.

Also during food trials your Shih Tzu can have absolutely no treats, because they might also be the source of the food allergy.

Flea Allergies

Dogs frequently become allergic to flea saliva.  When fleas bite dogs they commonly leave their saliva being.  Dogs become allergic to this saliva, so after flea bites you see red spots all over the skin.

As you can see there are several Shih Tzu allergies.  if you suspect your dog has an allergy you should see your veterinarian as soon as possible because Shih Tzu allergies tend to get worse over time.
