Shih Tzu Haircuts

Giving Your Shih Tzu a Trim

Shih Tzu haircuts are not difficult to give.  If you are thinking about doing it yourself, I encourage you to start.  Paying a groomer can get expensive,  and with a little practice you can do just as good of a just yourself.

Supplies

A grooming table is necessary to get the dog to the right height.  If you try to do it on the bed or floor you will make mistakes and make your back and knees sore.

Get a good quality clippers and take care of them.  Even a $20 pair of clippers from Walgreens will work and last for a long time if you take care of them, clean and oil them.

Blunt tip scissors for trimming the face is also a nice thing to have to help prevent you from hurting your dog.

Types of Shih Tzu Haircuts

I only really do two cuts, the puppy cut or where I just shave the hair all the same length.  Shaving the hair all the same length is fine and it looks good.

A puppy cut for me is just leaving the hair on the face longer and using a bow on top.  Remember that different cuts means different things to different groomers, so before leaving your dog at the groomers, make sure you are both on the same page.

Start a collection of Shih Tzu Haircuts and keep them in a binder, so you can show your groomer next time.
