Shih Tzu Pregnancy

Pregnant Shih Tzu Guide

A Shih Tzu pregnancy should be something that is well planned out ahead of time.  If you are not planning on breeding your Shih Tzu you should have her spayed as soon as possible.

How Long Dog A Shih Tzu Pregnancy Last?

A Shih Tzu pregnancy normally lasts about 2 months or more precisely anywhere from 59 to 63 days.  The reason why dog pregnancy dates are not as precise is because we start counting pregnancy days on the first mating.

For example once your Shih Tzu comes into standing heat and is willing to be mounted by a Shih Tzu stud, it should be bred on days 1, 3, and 5.  Even though she may not get pregnant until the third mating, we start counting her pregnancy on day 1.

Signs That My Shih Tzu Is Pregnant

It is hard to tell if a Shih Tzu is pregnant for the first half of the pregnancy because there are few changes.  Even a veterinarian would not be able to tell the first few weeks.

It is not until the 5th or 6th weeks that you will notice signs of Shih Tzu pregnancy.

These signs include abdominal enlargement, increased appetite, weight gain, vulva and nipple enlargement.

Normally you don't see nipple enlargement until the week or so before they give birth.

Signs That My Shih Tzu Will Give Birth Soon

When the Shih Tzu pregnancy is getting close to being over, you should provide a whelping box and a quite place to give birth.

Signs of imminent birth include a body temperature drop 24 hours before birth.  You can monitor the rectal temperature.  Also signs that a Shih Tzu will give birth soon is some milk coming from the nipples, and vulva enlargement and swelling.

Preparing For A Shih Tzu Birth

When you Shih Tzu whelps or gives birth you need to be there offering support if needed.  Shih Tzus are small dogs and can have a condition called dystoica which is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention.

Always have your veterinarian's number handy during a Shih Tzu pregnancy.  Please, you really shouldn't not be breeding your Shih Tzu.  There are so many dogs that euthanized in this country because no one wants them.

Be a responsible Shih Tzu owner and have your dog spayed to avoid having a  Shih Tzu pregnancy.
