Shih Tzu Skin Problems

Common Shih Tzu Skin Problems

Shih Tzu skin problems are not uncommon.  Because Shih Tzu are close to the ground and are very curious it is not uncommon for them to scrap or cut them selves.  here are some common Shih Tzu skin problems.

Mild scrapes

Mild scraps and cuts can happen on the face or rear legs commonly.  Most of these minor scraps or tiny cuts and easily be treated at home.  First clean the area with a dilute soap or other disinfectant that is safe for the skin.  Then dry the area well and apply some triple antibiotic ointment.

If the cut is on the face, I normally don't apply ointment because the usually just lick it off.

Lacerations

For more sever cuts and lacerations they require a veterinarian to suture them closed.  This is one Shih Tzu skin problem you can't solve on your own.

Deep lacerations usually require oral antibiotics as well to prevent systemic infection.

Hot Spots

Hot spots are round areas that are intensely inflamed and irritated.  Your dog will constantly like this area.

You can treat mild hot spots by yourself.  The most important thing is to make sure the hotspot gets a chance to dry out, so clip any hair around it so it gets lots of air.

Also wash this area and thoroughly dry it.  If it doesn't resolve in a few days see your veteriairna.

Shih Tzu Skin Rash And Allergy

Shih Tzu can get skin rashes and allergies.  Skin rashes commonly happen from moist damp skin.  I normally clip the hair shorter over these areas so the skin has a chance to breath and apply an anti inflammatory ointment.

Ear Infections

Technically ear infections are a skin problem.  Because Shih Tzu have floppy ears and sometimes they have hair growing in the ear canals they can get yeast infections.

Using a hemostat you can remove any hair in the ear canals allowing the area to get some air.  Also use a good ear cleaner a couple of times a day, along with some antibiotic ear drops from your veterinarian.

As you can see Shih Tzu skin problems can be handled by yourself in minor cases.  Always consult your veterinarian before treating your dog yourself.
